The Q: Who is your rescue role model?
It can be anyone from a compassionate volunteer to a celebrity animal advocate.
I was excited to ask this question, but I was even more excited when the answers started rolling in. I knew you are all great people doing wonderful things for animals, but it’s so nice to find out how supportive you are of each other!
It was a pleasure to read your stories and share your favorite rescue advocates in this episode!
Rescue Role Models Mentioned in the Show:
Casey’s rescue role model is Tia Torres from Pit Bulls & Parolees on Animal Planet. I didn’t know much about her or the show, but after reading the about page on her website I was super inspired by her story before fame.
Kelly submitted Barbara, the founder of Furry Friends Pet Rescue in Hopewell Junction, NY
Mari said her rescue role models were the main ladies behind Mr. Bones & Co. – a pit bull rescue founded by Elli Frank and co-directed by Marisa Grimshaw. Look out for their annual event Rescue the Runway in NYC!
Gordons2ndchance on IG looks up to Melody (@only1ne on IG), the founder of Love and Second Chances in northern California.
Teresa (AKA pinstripespirate) says that Katie Nordhaus is her rescue role model. She’s not only the Animal Control Officer from Franklin Township, NJ, but she also started a charity to help raise money for the shelter. It’s called Angel Tails Rescue. Katie also helps Second Chance for Animals.
Fred (AKA fred_stillstoned) says that his celebrity role model is Beth Stern, but he also looks up to @myfosterkittens and @furever_foster on Instagram. Fred says that all of these kitty advocates will even help with special needs and sick cats when many other fosters won’t! Fred and his girlfriend @jett._.thorn._.ton are looking forward to helping more rescue cats in the future.
Hart_for_horses submitted Suzanna Norris as their rescue hero. Suzee recently drove from Florida to North Carolina (over 13 hours!) to help rescue a momma horse and her newborn foal. She was in the middle of planning a huge event, but put her plans on hold when the ASPCA asked for her help AND ended bring home two more horse rescues!
Find out more about Help a Horse Day (4/23/16) on the Hart for Horses website.
Value584 says that Kari Whitman (@kari_whitman_interiors on IG) has been her role model since she was a child. She designs in NYC, LA, and Boulder and is the founder of Ace of Hearts Dog Rescue.
Neeko_cali’s hero in the animal world is Mayte Jannell from @maytesrescue!
A special thank you to Teresa for sharing my question and getting me a few more answers!!
Batprace says that Teresa is his rescue role model!
Gigianimalplanet looks up to her friend Elaine and her veterinarian husband. They take care of over fifty animals, mostly birds, but also dogs, chickens, and turtles too! She also says they “talk hilariously,” which, once you read the rest of the IG convo, translated to: they curse like truck drivers lol.
Cassidyandbelle looks up to her foster mom Teri (AKA @2manycats4me).
Little.c8 gave a shout out to all of her “ameowzing” rescue inspirations: @loopylunakitty,@lpnrn913, @max_maxthecat,@complicated_cats, @pinballscatproject,@12catsfromflorida, @zoro.2011,@the_nell_number_nine, @mookeet75,@trident_the_cat
Teresa says that little.c8 deserves some credit herself!
My Role Models
My personal rescue role models are currently Lisa Prince Fishler, founder and executive director of HeARTs Speak. I doubt she needs any introduction since I talk about her organization so much!!
Also Deb Ozarko is one of my newer rescue role models, and listening to her Unplug Podcast is helping me to be a better person with every new episode! She is compassionate about all beings and this Earth we all share.
My celebrity rescue role model is Betty White, because she’s a great mix of funny and compassionate. That’s the kind of lady I strive to be!
Oh yeah, and for those of you who came here to find out what Betty White said… once again, not at all animal rescue related and borderline explicit:
“Why do people say grow some balls? Balls are weak and sensitive. If you really wanna be tough, you should grow a vagina, those things can take a pounding.”
This is half of why Betty White is my rescue role model!
